Some of the first eligible and deserving people have been released under the First Step Act. Among them, Matthew Charles who served 21 years of a 35-year sentence for selling crack cocaine. Mr. Charles' case is a compelling story. He was released in 2016 after a sentence reduction. Mr. Charles had a successful reentry into society; he held a steady job, volunteered every week, had a solid and loving relationship, and a home. Two years after his release a Federal Court ruled his term was reduced in error. Mr. Charles had to return back to Federal Prison. Mr. Charles' legal team fought hard to get him released, exhausting all their efforts. When The First Step Act passed, he was eligible for immediate release. Our society is a much better place having Matthew Charles in it.
